New Samsung technology promises to almost double lithium ion battery capacity

We’ve heard it time and time again and add some. A new revolutionary battery that is going to prolong the life of our tech, unshackle it from the bounds of the wall socket, well, maybe not quite as dramatic, but, you definitely get the idea.

New Samsung technology promises to almost double lithium ion battery capacity

Joking aside, however, we are in dire need of a portable power revolution if we are going to keep up with the ever-increasing needs of our sophisticated tech. Given that the basic principles under which batteries operate, as well as their size limitations have become pretty fixed, the only salvation seems to be in new materials to enhance the controlled electro-chemical reaction we rely on. Researchers at Samsung have done just that and promise to deliver whopping 1.5 to 1.8 times greater charge in future commercial batteries.
The new technology boils down to a new method of coating battery cathodes with Graphene. Actually, the Graphene is directly grown onto a silicon coating surface, without forming silicon carbide. This idea has been experimented with before, but the Korean tech giant is confident that it has managed to develop a commercially-viable process. The end gain is that each full cell can reach a volumetric energy density of 972 Wh l−1 in its first cycle, which is around 1.5 to 1.8 times greater than current commercial lithium ion batteries.
New Samsung technology promises to almost double lithium ion battery capacity

The main challenge in this type of design is that it usually reduces the number of discharge and charge cycles of the battery significantly. However, Samsung researchers promise that they have dealt with the issue to some extent and claim their technology will offer good cycling performance (about 700 Wh l−1 on the 200th cycle) . And as long as their idea of good doesn’t mean throwing away your phone or perhaps even electric car once every couple of years, the concept definitely has potential. Like most cutting edge tech, however, there is still a lot of work to be done and Samsung estimates that its research will become marketable in no less than two or three years.

Samsung Galaxy A8 (the thinnest Galaxy ever) shows up in new photos, visits the FCC

Samsung Galaxy A8
At the moment, Samsung's skinniest smartphone (from the ones that have been officially announced) is the Galaxy A7, a device that's only 6.3 mm thin. But this will soon be dethroned by the Galaxy A8, which is even thinner, measuring 158 x 76.77 x 5.94 mm - thus being Samsung's first handset to have a thickness of under 6 mm.

While Samsung hasn't confirmed the existence of the A8, we've already seen the smartphone in several live photos. And now we can see it in new images, thanks to the fact that the device was approved by China's Telecommunication Equipment Certification Center (aka TENAA).

TENAA is confirming that the Galaxy A8 (model number SM-A8000) is only 5.94 mm thin, while also confirming many of its features. The new handset sports a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080 x 1920 pixels, runs Android 5.1 Lollipop, and is powered by an octa-core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon 615 processor. The A8 also comes with LTE, a 5 MP front-facing camera, a 16 MP rear camera, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of expandable storage space, and a 3050 mAh battery.

The Galaxy A8 is built around a metal frame, and kind of looks like a larger Galaxy S6.

In addition to being certified in China, the A8 was also recently approved by the FCC. However, the A8 that visited the FCC only has support for LTE band 41, which means it's a China-bound model. We don't know exactly when Samsung will announce the Galaxy A8, but it should happen pretty soon.

Samsung Galaxy S7 allegedly coming in H2 2015 to compete against the iPhone 6S

Samsung S7
According to a recent report from the South Korean media, Samsung is pushing to launch the Galaxy S7 in the second half of the year. We've previously heard that Samsung might launch the Galaxy Note 5 early this year to beat the iPhone 6S series to market, but this new rumor suggests that Samsung might hurry the Galaxy S7 to market as well. As this seems a pretty wild rumor, make sure to take it with a pinch of the proverbial grain of salt.

Newsis, a South Korean news publication quotes insider sources according to which Samsung has started work on the Galaxy S7 about 2-3 months ahead of schedule. Historically, Samsung has launched new Galaxy S flagships in the first quarter of the year, and an early development would allow the manufacturer to launch the Galaxy S7 by the end of 2015. If this rumor turns out to be accurate, this will be the first time that Samsung launches two Galaxy S iterations in the same year.

Given that Samsung usually works on a 12-month production cycle, this definitely seems to be one of the wilder rumors, but the reasoning might actually make sense. The manufacturer is said to shift development in order to better respond to the Apple iPhone 6S series by strengthening its high-end line-up in the second half of the year. Aside from an early Galaxy S7 and an early Galaxy Note 5, Samsung is also rumored to be gearing up to launch a larger version of the S6, called the Galaxy S6 edge Plus.

Even if this rumor turns out to be accurate, it remains to be seen what this head-on battle between Samsung and Apple will entail. Rumors claim that Samsung plans to leave Apple with less breathing room in the high-end segment of the smartphone market in the second half of the year, but it wouldn't be entirely impossible for such a tactic to hurt Samsung sales as well. Yesterday, a report came out according to which Samsung is now expected to sell 45 million Galaxy S6 and S6 edge units by the end of the year.

5.7-inch Samsung Galaxy A8 Shows Up In Live images

The Samsung Galaxy A8 has been visiting the rumor mill for a while lately with some disconcerting info on display size. Well, a new set of live images sheds more light on the matter and reveals a cautious departure from the A-series aesthetic.
5.7-inch Samsung Galaxy A8

While it was initially assumed that display size will be 5.7 inches, a GFXBench listing suggested a 5.5-inch diagonal. Pictured next to what is obviously a Galaxy A7, the new handset's display is clearly larger. It would appear that the original info was correct, and it's a 5.7-inch FullHD AMOLED panel.
On the front the device is more of a scaled up Galaxy S6, than a continuation of the A-series design language. The corners are rounded with a larger radius as opposed to the minor fillet of other members of the lineup. The surrounding metal frame is here, sporting a blend of the A-series and S6 designs.

Side bezels are extremely thin, making the footprint rather acceptable despite the ample screen size. Bottom bezel is a bit bulkier, but a larger home button was needed to accommodate the fingerprint reader, and maintaining proportions it required.
The back sports the familiar speaker/camera/flash arrangement, introduced with the Galaxy S3 and featured in the whole A-series. To spice things up though, on the A8 the speaker and and flash have traded places. Otherwise the back appears the same pearl white finish as other A models.

The photos don't tell much about the specs, but we know by now that the Galaxy A8 will come with a Snapdragon 615 chipset, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage which, will be expandable. The primary 16MP camera will be joined by a 5MP front shooter.
The LTE-enabled smartphone will boot Android 5.1.1 upon launch. Nearly 6mm taller than the 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 3, the Galaxy A8 measures 157.7 x 76.7 x 5.9mm and packs a 3,050mAh battery in a body weighing 140g.
There's no info on price and availability for now, but the obviously nearing official announcement will shed more light on the matter.
