Microsoft's Outlook App for Android Comes Out of Preview

Microsoft's Outlook App for Android Screenshot
Microsoft back in January released a preview version of the Outlook app for Android users and the company after nearly four months of wait has now removed the preview tag from the app. The Redmond giant on Wednesday released the out-of-beta Outlook app for Android, and it is now available to download from Google Play.
To recall, the Microsoft Outlook app is based on the popular email app made by Acompli which Microsoft bought in December. It allows both Android and iOS users to easily link emails to calendars and even works with file attachments. The out-of-beta Outlook app for Android features several changes from when the first preview version was released. With the general release, Microsoft is touting performance and stability improvements, and brings the Android app's feature set in line with the iOS version. Notable features of the Outlook app for Android include the automatic filtering of mails based on communication; schedule mail option, as well as quick delete, archive, or schedule message options. The app also allows viewing and attaching files from email, OneDrive, Dropbox, and other accounts. One of the most notable features is the built-in calendar feature that allows notifies users about appointments.
The Outlook app works with various services including Microsoft Exchange, Office 365, Outlook.com (including Hotmail, MSN), Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and iCloud.
The company earlier this month had updated its Outlook email apps for the Android (preview) and iOS platforms with a list of new features like unified address book and search directory, apart from Calendar improvements and more.
Recently, Cyanogen and Microsoft announced a strategic partnership that would see popular Microsoft services being integrated into Android-based custom ROM distribution. The deal will result in various Microsoft services and apps such as Bing, Skype, OneDrive, OneNote, Outlook, and Microsoft Office being pre-installed in future Cyanogen OS versions.

WhatsApp Claims 800 Million Active Users; Android App Gets Google Drive Backup, Restore

WhatsApp Claims 800 Million Active Users; Android App Gets Google Drive Backup, Restore
WhatsApp has crossed 800 million monthly active users, according to a Facebook post by its CEO and co-founder Jan Koum. The company had crossed 700 million active users in January, and thus can be seen to have added 100 million users in four months. Additionally, the latest version of WhatsApp for Android has made its way to the Web with backup/ restore options for chat history and media via Google Drive.(Also
Koum in his Facebook post clarifies that active users are different from registered users, taking a dig at other services that more typically make announcements about registered numbers. He said, "WhatsApp - now serving 800,000,000 monthly active users. Reminder for the press out there: active and registered users are not the same thing."
In January, Koum also claimed that WhatsApp saw a massive exchange of over 30 billion messages - every single day. Koum however has not shared the figures of messages sent daily this month.
With this rate of growth in number of monthly active users, WhatsApp is expected to cross the 1 billion monthly active user milestone by the end of this year. Despite an increasing number of instant messaging apps currently available to compete such as Hike, Line, WeChat and Facebook's own Messenger, WhatsApp has remained relevant for users, and recently added the popular voice calling feature for all Android users.
The company is expected to roll out the WhatsApp voice calling feature to iOS and Windows Phone users soon. The company also rolled out end-to-end encryption in November last year.
In other news, WhatsApp seems to gearing up to finally add backup/ restore options, as rumoured earlier, for chat history and media via Google's cloud storage service, the Google Drive. First spotted by Android Police, WhatsApp's latest Android version with 2.12.45 version has been spotted on apk hosting site APK Mirror and brings the option to backup/ restore.
WhatsApp Claims 800 Million Active Users; Android App Gets Google Drive Backup, RestoreUnfortunately, WhatsApp's official site still lists version 2.12.44 hinting that it might take some time to release the latest version. After installing the signed-apk, the WhatsApp backup/ restore option to Google Drive can be found in app's Settings > Chat Settings > Chat Backup. On tapping the backup option, the app requests users to enter a Google account to backup/ restore files to. Users can change the frequency of backup messages and media from daily, weekly, or monthly. It also gives app users the option to turn off auto-backup. Next users can choose to backup using Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi and cellular data. The report points out that WhatsApp has a default 4am set time for the auto-backup process.
For now, we'll have to wait for WhatsApp to roll out the updated app to Google Play and its own site to see if the company brings in any changes with the official release.

Ten Amazing iOS Widgets That Ensure You Don't Need to Open the App

Memory

Notification Centre widgets were among the best new features of iOS 8, introduced in September 2014. We wrote about the best iOS 8 widgets on launch day and those still are good seven months on. But, a few months in, there are many more apps with great widgets, with some even managing to pack in the entire functionality of the app in the Notification Centre widget itself.
These widgets are incredibly useful for at-a-glance information and save you a lot of time as you no longer need to open the app to get things done. We picked the best of this kind of widgets for you.
Launcher
Launcher widgetLauncher (Free) lets you create shortcuts so that you can launch apps, contacts or websites quickly. Want to WhatsApp your friends, FaceTime Mom, or start an automated Workflow, you can do it with just one tap. Once you've set up your shortcuts in the app, there's no need to open it.
Clips
Clips WidgetClips (Free) has an awesome widget that shows all items that you've copied recently. If you're reading a webpage, you might copy multiple pieces of information, and all will show up in Clips' widget. Tap any of these to copy it to your clipboard again, and then you can paste that anywhere you need.
Music Center
Music centerMusic Center (Free) offers an entire music player with album art squeezed into one widget. Yes, you can control the music player through the Control Centre on iOS, but your options are limited. The Music Center widget lets you browse tracks and play what you want.
iTranslate
itranslate widgetiTranslate (Free) is a translation app that has a fantastic widget on iOS. It translates anything that's copied to your clipboard. Once you set the language you need translations in using the app, the widget works perfectly.
Wdgts
calculator widgetWdgts (Free) is still our favourite iOS app for its handy widgets. It lets you add widgets for calculator, calendar with month view, to check memory and disk space usage, photo frame, to show the time in other time zones and a network usage monitor. The app exists only for its widgets.
Do Button
do button widgetIFTTT is a popular automation service, which recently rebranded its iOS app (now called IF) and launched a new app called Do Button (Free). The last one lets you create or add up to three IFTTT recipes that you can launch with one tap from the widget. It's very useful.
My Data Usage
my data usage widgetIf you're always exceeding your data plan, then you might want to start checking your usage. The My Data Usage (Free) widget tracks your cellular data usage and shows you when you are close to hitting the limit you set. It also shows you the connection speed, and can also measure CPU, RAM and storage usage. You can set a limit of 1GB in the app and just glance at the widget to see if you're close to using it up.
The free version works only for 15 days, after which you can download the app's pro version for Rs. 60. Alternatively, you may buy the app Dataman Next for Rs. 120, which gives you warning notifications when the limit is running out.
2048 Widget
2048 widget Widgets aren't useful only for apps. If you want to play a game without unlocking your iOS device, then you can download widget-based games too. 2048 Widget (Free) is one of these. The widget takes up a lot of space as it uses arrow keys (since you can't use swipe controls in the Notification Centre), but you can download this if that's not an issue.
Overglide
overglide widgetOverglide (Rs. 60) is a simple game. You control a paper plane and the goal is to keep it from crashing into the obstacles. The widget houses the whole game and it's fun to play.
Minesweeper
minesweeper widgetMost people who've used Windows have played Minesweeper (Rs. 60). The classic game requires you to tap tiles and avoid mines and it's well-suited to be played from the Notification Centre.
