The Moto E (Gen 2), the popular durable budget smartphone, has become even more affordable, with Motorola slashing its price by Rs. 1,000. The price cut revises the retail price of the 3G variant of the smartphone from Rs. 6,999 to Rs. 5,999, and the 4G variant from Rs. 7,999 to Rs. 6,999

Flipkart, the company's exclusive online retailer, is also holding an exchange offer on both the Moto E (Gen 2) variants that can get you up to Rs. 2,000 off with an eligible smartphone.

Launched earlier this year, the Moto E (Gen 2) 3G variant sports a 4.5-inch display of 540x960 pixels resolution. It is powered by Qualcomm's entry level Snapdragon 200 quad-core chipset clocked at 1.2GHz coupled with 1GB RAM. The 4G variant, which was launched a couple of months later, on the other hand sports a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 processor. The handsets are otherwise identical in terms of specifications.

Other features of the handset include a 5-megapixel camera at the back, and a 0.3-megapixel camera placed upfront. The Moto E (Gen 2) comes with 8GB inbuilt storage which can be further expanded up to 32GB using a microSD card should you need more storage.

The price cut comes as the company addresses the increasingly competitive smartphone market in India. The arrival of smartphones like Xiaomi's Mi 4i, and Lenovo's K3 Note have forced vendors to make their entry and mid-level smartphones cheaper.

Motorola's stark rival Xiaomi recently slashed the price of its mid-range handset the Redmi Note 4G by Rs. 2,000 to make the phone available at Rs. 7,999. The company also knocked Rs. 2,000 off the retail price of Redmi 2 to Rs. 5,999.

The Moto E (Gen 2) price cut could also mean the imminent arrival of new phones. Indeed, Motorola has a media event scheduled for July 28 where it is expected to launch the third generation Moto G, and the third generation Moto X. The company could also launch the second generation Moto 360 at the event.
