YouTube Gaming App to Allow Android Game Streaming, to Hit Japan First

yt gaming app youtube
Right now, the YouTube Gaming app is limited to the US and UK - the two regions it was launched in last month. During the Tokyo Game Show 2015 (TGS 2015), the Google-owned company announced that it would be making it to Asia soon with Japan being the first stop.
But this is not all, your Android phone will be able to stream live video games to YouTube. It's a move to cash in on the popularity of mobile gaming in markets like Japan. And while this update does not have a release date yet, it will be coming along with the YouTube Gaming app when it hits.
"Japan's mobile games define its gaming culture, far more so than in other countries," says YouTube's global gaming head Ryan Wyatt in a statement. "This trend shows there's a real need for gamers to easily share what's on their screen with the gaming community, as it happens."
Although there's no release date for the app in markets like Asia aside from "soon", it's an interesting strategy from YouTube. Its competition, the Amazon-owned Twitch has built up a strong fan following from the hardcore console and PC gamers over the years. Diversifying to mobile not only strengthens its chances of survival but gives Android its own streaming solution for gaming.
It also begs the question, how would platforms like Everyplay - which lets developers allow users to record gameplay and share it in their games, stay relevant in the face of competition that could essentially be, at the flip of a switch (since Google is behind Android and YouTube) embedded on every Android device?

YouTube Gaming, Google's Twitch Competitor, to Launch Wednesday

Youtube Gaming
YouTube's big push to gaming, which it first announced in June, is set to release on Wednesday as a standalone website and will also be available via apps on Android and iOS.
YouTube Gaming will compete against Amazon-owned Twitch, which currently leads the game live-streaming business with milestones such as around 2 million concurrent viewers. The launch of YouTube Gaming came months after Google reportedly failed to acquire Twitch due to potential antitrust concerns.
The YouTube Gaming service will offer gamers more than 25,000 game-specific pages to let them quickly find game-related videos and other content. The service will also curate live-streams from thousands of gaming-related channels.
With YouTube Gaming service, the company also wants to make it easier for people to live-stream games on YouTube. The company has launched a new page called Stream, currently in beta, which gives users the option to start streaming at a personal URL.
"YouTube gaming brings you closer to the games, gamers, and culture that matter to you," said Frank Petterson, YouTube engineering manager. "Together, we all make gaming better. Our peers make us better gamers, and games are made better by the communities that surround them."
YouTube Gaming will utilise HTML5 technology to stream content. It will also allow streamers to use a "DVR Mode." DVR Mode will allow gamers to buffer last four hours of a stream and play it at a later time.
The new YouTube Gaming service will be launched on Web on YouTube's new Gaming website and will be available in all countries where YouTube is available. The Android and iOS clients, on the other hand, will be released in the UK and USA on Wednesday, with other countries getting the support soon.

YouTube Makes Virtual Reality Push With 360-Degree 3D Videos

Youtube wall
YouTube says it's making a further push into virtual reality, promising to add 3D support for videos that play back in its 360-degree format.Thursday's announcement comes a day after the debut of the first online 360-degree ad, a commercial for Bud Light.
Right now, viewers using the mobile YouTube app or Google's Chrome browser can pan around in any direction in the 360-degree videos. They're shot using special camera rigs that look in many directions, and software stitches together all the video.
Support for 3D means wearers of headsets like Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR or Google Cardboard can see images in three dimensions as they swivel around to change their view. YouTube also said it would provide special camera rigs that support the format at its studios around the world, including at two locations opening in the next year in Toronto and Mumbai.
YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki announced the push during VidCon, an annual convention for fans and creators of online video at the Anaheim Convention Center.
"We've seen big name artists like Avicii and Bjork do some breakthrough things with 3D video, but we want to empower all of you to chart this new frontier," she said.
Wojcicki also announced a redesign of YouTube's mobile app that allows fans to be notified when creators they follow post new videos. It also adds editing tools for filters and music within the app. The redesign is available for Android devices right away, with support for Apple devices coming soon.

YouTube Hires Former MTV Executive to Create Original Content

YouTube Hires Former MTV Executive to Create Original Content
YouTube said on Wednesday it hired former MTV executive Susanne Daniels to join its division that works toward creating original online series.
Daniels will manage the YouTube Originals development pipeline and oversee production, the video-sharing website said.
She will join as vice president, YouTube Originals and report to Robert Kyncl, head of content & business operations at YouTube.
YouTube's competitors Netflix and Amazon are getting aggressive toward producing original online series and independent low-budget films as traditional media outlets suffer from dwindling audience numbers and falling advertising revenue.
Earlier this year, Amazon announced its plans to produce close to 12 movies a year with budgets of between $5 million (roughly Rs. 31 crores) and $25 million (roughly Rs. 159 crores). This was announced shortly after the e-commerce company signed director Woody Allen to create a TV series.
Google bought YouTube in 2006 for $1.65 billion (roughly Rs. 10,507 crores) in a stock-for-stock transaction.
YouTube earlier this week started rolling out an updated version of the YouTube app for Android, which fits vertical videos. Earlier this month, Google brought the 60 frames per second (fps) video playback feature to its Android and iOS apps. The feature was first rolled out for desktop users and was initially supported by Chrome and Safari browsers.
With the rollout of 60fps live-streaming, any live stream on YouTube at 60fps was transcoded into stream of 720p60 and 1080p60, which showed up smooth playback for gaming and fast-paced video. Last month, Google launched the YouTube Newswire. The initiative will draw on user-contributed videos on YouTube such as those which have been important sources for events such as the Arab Spring uprisings and protests in Ferguson, Missouri.

The YouTube mobile app now offers 60fps video streaming

YouTube is working hard retain its dominance in the online multimedia realm. And while a lot of that has to do with engaging audiences and encouraging creativity and content-creators, maintaining a technical edge is equally important. Innovations on the PC front are now way past high-definition content, with resolutions of 4K and beyond already available, as well as frame rates up to 60fps.

Dealing with mobile devices, however, presents a whole new set of challenges for YouTube, along with new possibilities to explore, like offline playback for example. Still, it is only a matter of time before our increasingly-powerful mobile tech gets access to proper high-definition content as well. Today, YouTube has made another step in this direction. The company’s Android and iOS apps now have 60fps content at 720p and 1080p resolutions.
The change affects the whole platform and is done server-side, so no client updates are required and you should already be able to take advantage of the new frame rates. Also, it is important to note, that 60fps is now the default option for HD content, replacing the previous 30fps default. This could, potentially spell trouble for certain low-powered devices, which might not have the processing power to cope with the doubled frame rate. Sadly, that’s the only way to move forward and there is always the solution to downscale a bit below 720p and still view your content on low-end hardware.

And if you are wondering what the big deal with 60fps is, here is the gist of it. Most traditional video content is still recorded and played back at about 30fps and even lower for movies – 24 fps. Still, as any gamer will tell you, it can always be smoother, hence, the strive to increase frame rates.
If you want to see what the hype is all about for yourself, head on over to YouTube, pick up a high-paced, action-packed clip and enjoy the glorious 60fps.
