Samsung Largest 4G LTE Device Brand in India, Followed by Lenovo: CMR

samsung outwards
Analytics firm Cybermedia Research (CMR) on Thursday said that Korean electronics giant Samsung topped 25 brands to lead the 4G LTE devices vertical in the Indian smartphone market in terms of shipments.
"Samsung currently leads the market with 30 percent share of devices, emerging as the largest 4G smartphone brand. The Korean brand increased its market share from 24.5 percent in the first quarter (January-March) to 30 percent in terms of units shipped," CMR said.
Lenovo gained significantly and was behind Samsung with a 21.8 percent market share, while Xiaomi rounded off the top three players with 17.1 percent market share.
"The best selling handsets in the 4G/ LTE segment were the A6000 from Lenovo and Redmi 2 from Xiaomi. This indicates that the India market is being propelled by shipments of devices in the Rs.6,000-10,000 price range," said CMR Telecoms Practice analyst Vikrant Singh.
Interestingly, Asus made an impressive start figuring in the 'top 10' in the first quarter. However, Micromax's share of shipments declined from 10 percent in the first quarter to 6 percent in the second. Sony was able to garner a market share of 5 percent owing to good traction of its Xperia M4 and E4 models.
The segment in itself grew 154 percent quarter-on-quarter to reach 5.7 million units during April-June 2015 continuing the momentum of doubling in shipments for the second consecutive quarter. The 4G devices shipped during the period continued to be predominantly smartphones with 97 percent contribution in terms of units.
"As per earlier estimates, we expected that India would ship 5 million 4G Smartphones a quarter by the fourth quarter of 2015. But, with the current trend of doubling of shipments every quarter, we can now realistically expect that number to be in the vicinity of 10 million; in that event total 4G device shipments in the country should cross 11 million units per quarter by the end of this calendar year," said CMR Telecoms Practice lead analyst Faisal Kawoosa.
"This is mainly happening due to four factors - reputed brands launching their LTE devices, for instance, smartphone vendors like Asus; vendors going beyond online sales and venturing into 'offline' stores, such as Xiaomi; players adding more models to their existing 4G portfolio like OnePlus, and the recent full blown launch of 4G services by Airtel, which enables users to actually use their devices for such a feature."
Also, the number of players in the device segment increased from 19 in the first quarter (January-March) to 25 during the second. "Most of the big brands reflected an increase in their 4G/LTE shipments during second quarter of 2015, except Apple and OnePlus whose shipments declined as also their market shares," said CMR.
"While 4G smartphone and datacard shipments grew at 157 percent and 107 percent respectively, tablets declined by 7 percent," the firm added.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+
Samsung has launched the Galaxy S6 Edge+ in India. As expected, the company has not brought the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 to the country at the same event. The Galaxy S6 Edge+ has been priced at Rs. 57,900 for the 32GB variant, and Samsung says the 64GB variant will not be launched at this time. The smartphone will go on sale on August 28, while pre-orders open from Wednesday.

The Android 5.1 Lollipop-based Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ features a 5.7-inch QHD (1440x2560 pixels) Super-Amoled display with a pixel density of 515ppi, and is powered by a 64-bit octa-core Exynos 7420 SoC with four Cortex-A57 cores clocked at 2.1GHz, and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5GHz, apart from 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM.

The Galaxy S6 Edge+ smartphone features a 16-megapixel rear camera with f/1.9 aperture and optical image stabilisation, apart from a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The camera app can be opened with a double press on the home button, which also bears the fingerprint sensor. A Live Broadcast feature is also being touted.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ has no microSD card slot, and features a 3000mAh non-removable battery. Samsung said with its Fast Charging technology, wired charging will deliver a full charge in roughly 90 minutes, and wireless charging a full charge in roughly 120 minutes.

The Galaxy S6 Edge+ comes with a 4G LTE Cat. 6 modem and support for India's 4G LTE bands. It features NFC and MST technology to power the Samsung Pay mobile payment service, but for now, no details of when the service will be launched in India has been revealed. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, GPS/ A-GPS, and Micro-USB 2.0.

The Samsung Galaxy Edge+ measures 154.4x75.8x6.9mm, and weighs 153 grams. It will be available in Gold Platinum and Silver Titanium colour variants. Samsung will also be providing 100GB of OneDrive cloud storage for free.

The dual-edge display of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ comes with a new UI feature called Apps Edge to take advantage of the curved display, over and above the People Edge feature seen in the Galaxy S6 Edge. It similarly allows users to pin commonly used apps to the side display, for quick access.

The company also announced a BlackBerry-like Keyboard Cover (Rs. 4,499) for the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ smartphone, apart from wireless charging module (Rs. 3,599) and a 'Smart' Clear View Cover (Rs. 2,999). The company is also touting the presence of Samsung Knox Active Protection, and the My Knox app, on the Galaxy S6 Edge+.
