Lenovo IdeaPad Y700-17ISK Gaming Laptop Launched at Rs. 1,25,000

Ideapad Y700 peripherals Lenovo
At the Lenovo India Gaming Week in Mumbai, Lenovo unveiled a new gaming laptop for India - the Lenovo IdeaPad Y700-17ISK.
The IdeaPad Y700-17ISK sports a quad-core Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor (base clock of 2.6GHz that goes up to 3.5GHz in Turbo), a 128GB solid state drive, a 1TB 5400rpm hard drive, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, a 17-inch full HD display (1920x1080 pixels) and an Nvidia GTX 960M video card with 4GB of GDDR5 video RAM.
It runs Windows 10 and weighs a hefty 3.5 kilograms. But that's not the only thing heavy about it, the laptop costs Rs. 1,25,000, inclusive of taxes.
Even more amusing, Lenovo Gaming Week's focus is on eSports, which means games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2 are at the forefront and playable on all its demo units at the event. These are the kind of games that would run perfectly fine on a toaster. So, why launch a pricey gaming laptop here? Lenovo's answer was anything but forthcoming.
"It's because one we're associated with this [Lenovo India Gaming Week] and second, overall gaming is one of the biggest names and it would help us get that association faster to show what serious gaming is like," said Hiral Somaiya, National Product Manager for Consumer Notebooks at Lenovo.
Somaiya acknowledged that the lack of big AAA games like Grand Theft Auto V and The Witcher 3 to show off its new launch was a concern. The company is planning to launch a 15-inch variant and desktop PCs as well. This is something he divulged when asked if Lenovo was planning to bundle any games with the Y700.
Ideapad Y700 Lenovo
"Not for this one [the Y700] but there is something we're working on. We're talking to Nvidia and trying to see how we can do something bigger post-Diwali season," he said. "When we're going to launch our desktop version... we'll do something across [laptops and desktops] because it will be a bigger discussion point for them [Nvidia] as well."
"We're using Nvidia graphics and we definitely want to associate with that," he continued.
For most part, the gaming PC space has been dominated by assembled computers simply because affordability and customisation is a concern that most gamers face.
This ensured that companies like Alienware with their high prices are largely irrelevant when it comes down to consumers putting down money on what to buy. It's something GPU manufacturers like Nvidia are aware of and have tried to solve.
Last year, it launched the Battlebox range - a sort of hardware guideline as to what your neighbourhood PC store should sell to you when you ask for a gaming PC, but that initiative seems to have died a premature death. It made us wonder what makes Lenovo's approach any different.
"The idea is not to sell 500 or a 1000 units, because it's a fairly small segment," Somaiya explained. "The idea is to give this as a value proposition to set of buyers and then learn from that and deliver other experiences."
Essentially this implies that the audience for Lenovo's latest are guinea pigs or on the bleeding edge of portable PC gaming in the country depending how you look at it.
Idea centre Ideapad Lenovo
"17-inch anyway is going to be a very small market. Not even 0.1 percent so it's a drop in the ocean. But for those looking for a 17-inch option this is a serious offering," he told us. "We're not looking at big numbers for the 17-inch but 15-inch which is the standard screen size offering we will definitely be looking at bigger numbers."
Don't expect availability via your local PC store or online sites like Amazon either. The Y700 is limited to Lenovo's own online portal with the 15-inch variant being made available to other vendors when it hits.
However the most glaring concern are its specifications. For Rs. 1,25,000 you're getting a laptop that can play most games at high and not the highest or ultra quality settings possible. For that kind of money, you can assemble a rather luxurious gaming PC. Unless of course you really need the portability which makes the Y700 fit right in to the old gaming laptop maxim that makes it a compromise rather than the best option to play your games. Even more so, if it's Dota 2 or Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
Lenovo also launched new gaming accessories alongside, with the Lenovo Y Gaming Surround Sound Headset priced at Rs. 5,070, the Lenovo Y Gaming Precision Mouse at Rs. 3,770, the Lenovo Y Gaming Mechanical Switch Keyboard at Rs. 8,000, the Lenovo Y Gaming Backpack at Rs. 8,000, and the Lenovo Y Gaming Mouse Mat at Rs. 715.

Samsung Largest 4G LTE Device Brand in India, Followed by Lenovo: CMR

samsung outwards
Analytics firm Cybermedia Research (CMR) on Thursday said that Korean electronics giant Samsung topped 25 brands to lead the 4G LTE devices vertical in the Indian smartphone market in terms of shipments.
"Samsung currently leads the market with 30 percent share of devices, emerging as the largest 4G smartphone brand. The Korean brand increased its market share from 24.5 percent in the first quarter (January-March) to 30 percent in terms of units shipped," CMR said.
Lenovo gained significantly and was behind Samsung with a 21.8 percent market share, while Xiaomi rounded off the top three players with 17.1 percent market share.
"The best selling handsets in the 4G/ LTE segment were the A6000 from Lenovo and Redmi 2 from Xiaomi. This indicates that the India market is being propelled by shipments of devices in the Rs.6,000-10,000 price range," said CMR Telecoms Practice analyst Vikrant Singh.
Interestingly, Asus made an impressive start figuring in the 'top 10' in the first quarter. However, Micromax's share of shipments declined from 10 percent in the first quarter to 6 percent in the second. Sony was able to garner a market share of 5 percent owing to good traction of its Xperia M4 and E4 models.
The segment in itself grew 154 percent quarter-on-quarter to reach 5.7 million units during April-June 2015 continuing the momentum of doubling in shipments for the second consecutive quarter. The 4G devices shipped during the period continued to be predominantly smartphones with 97 percent contribution in terms of units.
"As per earlier estimates, we expected that India would ship 5 million 4G Smartphones a quarter by the fourth quarter of 2015. But, with the current trend of doubling of shipments every quarter, we can now realistically expect that number to be in the vicinity of 10 million; in that event total 4G device shipments in the country should cross 11 million units per quarter by the end of this calendar year," said CMR Telecoms Practice lead analyst Faisal Kawoosa.
"This is mainly happening due to four factors - reputed brands launching their LTE devices, for instance, smartphone vendors like Asus; vendors going beyond online sales and venturing into 'offline' stores, such as Xiaomi; players adding more models to their existing 4G portfolio like OnePlus, and the recent full blown launch of 4G services by Airtel, which enables users to actually use their devices for such a feature."
Also, the number of players in the device segment increased from 19 in the first quarter (January-March) to 25 during the second. "Most of the big brands reflected an increase in their 4G/LTE shipments during second quarter of 2015, except Apple and OnePlus whose shipments declined as also their market shares," said CMR.
"While 4G smartphone and datacard shipments grew at 157 percent and 107 percent respectively, tablets declined by 7 percent," the firm added.

Lenovo A2010 is a step in this direction."

Lenovo's New ThinkPad Laptops Feature First Mobile Intel Xeon Processors

Lenovo Thinkpad P70
If you are in the market for a high-end laptop, you will want to check out Lenovo's new offering. The largest PC vendor has unveiled the P50 and the P70 laptops in its marquee ThinkPad lineup. The new laptops boast Intel's first mobile Xeon processors based on its Skylake microarchitecture, and allow a user to add up to a whopping 64GB of RAM into them.
The company unveiled the new laptops, called mobile workstations due to their specifications and size, at the SIGGRAPH 2015 Conference and Exhibition in Los Angeles earlier this week. The Lenovo ThinkPad P70 sports a 17-inch display which is available in FHD and 4K display resolutions. It is powered by Intel's quad-core Xeon E3-1500M v5 processors, and supports up to 64GB of DDR4 ECC RAM. As for the software, the new laptops come with Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7, or even Linux-based Ubuntu operating system options. The pricing for the P50 starts at $1,599 (roughly Rs. 104,000), whereas the P70 will slightly break your bank at $1,999 (roughly Rs. 1,30,000). The laptops will go on sale later this year.

Lenovo’s David Hill reimagines a retro style ThinkPad with modern hardware

Remember the old-school IBM ThinkPad notebooks (or laptops as we used to call them back then)? This was before the brand was acquired by Lenovo, who still makes ThinkPads but they have now evolved with the times.
ThinkPad with modern hardware

In his blog post, David Hill, Vice President, Lenovo Corporate Identity & Design, wonders about the possibilities of making a retro-style ThinkPad again, but with modern hardware. It will have all the trappings of the older models, including a blue enter key, 7 row classic keyboard, 16:10 aspect ratio screen, multi-color ThinkPad logo, dedicated volume controls, rubberized paint, exposed screws, lots of status LEDs, and more.
ThinkPad with modern hardware

Hill compared the design of the ThinkPad series to that of cars like Porsches, Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, Fiat 500, and Mini Cooper, and how they have maintained their design identity over the years. But most importantly, Hill believes people still fondly remember the ThinkPad designs of yore, and would still be excited to buy something that looks like that, which is a testament to the original design.
He didn’t actually say that Lenovo would be making something like this for sure, as the cost involved in making it should be justified by the sales. Perhaps his blog post was just to gauge the general interest in the idea, and if enough people seem interested maybe you would see a classic-looking ThinkPad but with modern hardware.
